For most adult French Bulldogs, a 24-inch long crate is ideal. Frenchies typically weigh between 16 and 28 pounds and stand about 11 to 13 inches at the shoulder. A 24-inch crate gives them enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably without soiling one corner and sleeping in another.
A 30-inch crate is acceptable if you have a larger male or a Frenchie that prefers more space, but avoid going bigger than necessary. Too much room defeats the purpose of crate training by encouraging your dog to use one end as a bathroom.
Puppies need a smaller space or they will have accidents. The best approach is to buy a 24-inch crate with a divider panel. Start the puppy in a space just large enough for them to turn around and lie down - usually about 12 to 14 inches of the crate's length. Move the divider back as your puppy grows.
Most Frenchie puppies outgrow the divided section by 4 to 5 months and can use the full 24-inch crate by 6 months.
Wire crates offer the best ventilation and visibility. They fold flat for travel and usually include a divider panel. Plastic airline crates are great for car rides and dogs that prefer a cozier, den-like feel. Furniture-style crates blend into home decor but are more expensive and harder to clean.
For Frenchies, wire crates with a removable tray are the most practical choice. The breed is prone to overheating, and the airflow of a wire crate helps keep them comfortable.
Add a washable bed or mat, a safe chew toy, and a lightweight blanket draped over the top to create a den-like atmosphere. Never use the crate as punishment. Feed meals inside the crate and toss treats in randomly so your Frenchie associates the space with positive experiences.
