Environmental allergies (pollen, dust mites, mold, and grass) are the most common trigger. These cause seasonal flare-ups that peak in spring and fall. Food allergies, usually to chicken, beef, dairy, or grains, cause year-round itching and gastrointestinal upset. Contact allergies from detergents, shampoos, or synthetic fabrics are less common but still possible.
Many Frenchies have multiple allergy types simultaneously, which makes diagnosis tricky. A dog with both environmental and food allergies will itch year-round with seasonal spikes.
The first place allergies show up is usually the paws. Excessive licking, brown staining between the toes, and raw pads are telltale signs. Next comes the belly and armpits, which develop pink or red patches. Ear infections that keep coming back are another major clue. And finally, face folds can become inflamed, moist, and smelly when allergies trigger yeast overgrowth.
For mild cases, a limited-ingredient diet, frequent paw wipes after outdoor time, and hypoallergenic shampoo can control symptoms. For moderate to severe allergies, your vet may prescribe Apoquel or Cytopoint - both are safe, effective options that suppress the itch signal without the side effects of steroids.
Allergy testing and immunotherapy (allergy shots) are the gold standard for environmental allergies. The process takes 6 to 12 months to show full results, but the long-term payoff is huge.
Feed a single-protein, high-quality diet. Wipe your Frenchie's paws and face folds daily. Use fragrance-free, pH-balanced shampoo. Wash bedding weekly in hot water. And keep your Frenchie at a healthy weight. Obesity makes every skin condition worse.
