Raw feeding has exploded in popularity among dog owners, and Frenchie parents are no exception. The idea of feeding a biologically appropriate diet of raw meat, bones, and organs is appealing. But French Bulldogs have unique digestive sensitivities that make raw diets more complicated than Instagram makes it look.

The Case for Raw Feeding

Proponents claim raw diets improve coat quality, reduce allergies, increase energy, and produce smaller, less odorous stools. Some Frenchies with chronic skin issues or food intolerances do see dramatic improvements on a well-formulated raw diet. The diet is also free of fillers, artificial preservatives, and low-quality meat byproducts that trigger reactions in sensitive dogs.

The Risks Specific to Frenchies

French Bulldogs are notorious for sensitive stomachs. A sudden switch to raw food often causes vomiting, diarrhea, or pancreatitis — especially if the diet is too high in fat. Their flat faces also make chewing raw bones risky. Small bones can become lodged in the airway, and weight-bearing bones from large animals can fracture teeth.

Bacterial contamination is another concern. Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria are real risks for both dogs and the humans preparing the food. Frenchies that lick their owners after eating raw meat can transfer pathogens directly.

If You Choose Raw, Do It Right

Work with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist to formulate a balanced recipe. Frenchies need precise ratios of muscle meat, organ meat, bone, and supplementation. A DIY raw diet without professional guidance almost always leads to nutritional deficiencies.

Use human-grade meat from reputable sources. Freeze meat for at least 3 weeks to kill parasites. Wash bowls, surfaces, and your hands after every meal. And avoid raw pork and wild game due to parasite risk.

The Kibble Alternative

For most Frenchie owners, a high-quality commercial kibble or fresh-cooked subscription service is the safer, easier choice. Brands like Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, and Farmer's Dog offer complete nutrition without the bacterial risk or formulation complexity.
