If you own a French Bulldog, you have already learned that their digestive system is about as reliable as a weather forecast. Vomiting, loose stools, gas, and general stomach upset are practically a Frenchie rite of passage. The good news is that most mild digestive episodes respond well to simple home remedies.

The Bland Diet Reset

Bland diet for French Bulldog upset stomach

The first line of defense for any Frenchie stomach upset is the classic bland diet. Boil plain white-meat chicken (no skin, no seasoning) and white rice in a 1:2 ratio — one part chicken to two parts rice. Feed small, frequent meals every 4 to 6 hours instead of the usual two large meals. This gives the digestive system a chance to rest and recover without going completely empty.

Most mild cases of vomiting or diarrhea resolve within 24 to 48 hours on a bland diet. Once stools firm up, gradually reintroduce your Frenchie's regular food over 3 to 5 days by mixing increasing amounts of kibble with the bland food.

Pumpkin: The Frenchie Gut Miracle

Plain canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just 100% pumpkin) is one of the most effective and safe home remedies for Frenchie digestive issues. The soluble fiber in pumpkin absorbs excess water in the intestines, firming up loose stools. It also adds bulk that helps with constipation. Add one to two teaspoons to your Frenchie's food once or twice daily during an upset stomach episode.

Pumpkin is also a great long-term addition to your Frenchie's diet if they have chronically soft stools. Many owners add a small amount daily as a preventive measure.

Bone Broth for Hydration and Gut Healing

When your Frenchie has diarrhea or is refusing to eat, dehydration becomes a real risk. Low-sodium bone broth (homemade or store-bought with no onion or garlic) is an excellent way to encourage fluid intake and provide gut-healing collagen and gelatin. Offer it warm in a separate bowl or pour it over the bland diet to make it more appealing.

You can also freeze bone broth into ice cubes and offer them as a treat — many Frenchies who refuse water will happily lick a broth cube.

Probiotics for Gut Flora Restoration

After any digestive upset, the gut flora is disrupted. A canine-specific probiotic helps restore the balance of beneficial bacteria faster. Look for products containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium animalis, which are well-studied in dogs. Plain, unsweetened yogurt with live cultures is a decent short-term option if you do not have a canine probiotic on hand.

Give probiotics for at least 2 to 4 weeks after any digestive episode for best results.

Ginger for Nausea

Small amounts of fresh ginger or ginger powder can help settle nausea in dogs. Add a tiny pinch (less than 1/4 teaspoon for a Frenchie) to their food. Ginger has natural anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory properties that can calm a queasy stomach. Do not overdo it — too much ginger can cause heartburn.

When to Call the Vet

Home remedies are appropriate for mild, short-lived stomach upset. Call your vet immediately if your Frenchie vomits more than three times in a day, has bloody diarrhea, shows signs of lethargy or abdominal pain, or if symptoms do not improve within 48 hours. Puppies and senior dogs dehydrate faster and need veterinary attention sooner.
