Paw Soaks for Itching and Allergen Removal
After every outdoor walk, rinse your Frenchie's paws in a shallow basin of warm water. This removes pollen, grass, mold spores, and other environmental allergens that stick to the pads and between the toes, which is the primary cause of paw licking in allergic Frenchies. Pat dry thoroughly, especially between the toes, where moisture causes yeast infections.
For inflamed, itchy paws, add a tablespoon of Epsom salt to the warm water soak. Epsom salt reduces swelling and draws out irritants. Soak for 5 minutes, then rinse and dry completely. Do not let your Frenchie drink the Epsom salt water — it acts as a laxative.
Chamomile Tea Paw Rinse
Brew a strong chamomile tea, let it cool completely, and use it as a paw rinse. Chamomile has natural anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that calm irritated skin. Pour it over the paws, let it sit for a minute, then pat dry. This is especially gentle for Frenchies with very sensitive skin who react to stronger remedies.
Coconut Oil and Shea Butter for Cracked Pads
Dry, cracked paw pads are painful and can split open, creating entry points for infection. Massage a small amount of virgin coconut oil or pure shea butter into the pads before bedtime. Both are safe if licked and provide deep moisturization that heals cracking over several days of consistent use.
For severe cracking, look for a commercial paw balm containing beeswax, shea butter, and vitamin E. These create a protective barrier that stays on longer than plain oils. Apply after the last walk of the day when your Frenchie is settling down for the night.
Apple Cider Vinegar for Yeast Between Toes
If your Frenchie has brown staining between their toes and a yeasty smell, yeast overgrowth is the culprit. Dilute one part ACV with one part water and apply with a cotton ball between the toes after paw soaks. The acidity disrupts yeast growth. Do this daily for a week and you should see significant improvement.
Protecting Paws from Hot Pavement
In summer, pavement can reach 150 degrees when the air temperature is just 87 degrees. If you cannot hold your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds, it is too hot for your Frenchie's paws. Walk in the early morning or evening, stick to grass, or use dog booties. Applying a thin layer of paw balm before walks also provides a mild heat barrier.
Baking Soda for Odor and Mild Irritation
A baking soda paste (equal parts baking soda and water) applied between the toes for 10 minutes, then rinsed off, can neutralize odor and soothe mild irritation. It is particularly useful for the musty smell that develops when paws stay damp. Always rinse completely and dry thoroughly after use.
When to See a Vet
If paw licking is constant and obsessive, if you see open sores, significant swelling, limping, or if home remedies do not improve the situation within a week, schedule a vet visit. Chronic paw issues in Frenchies are almost always allergy-driven and may require prescription treatment to resolve at the root cause.
