Colloidal Oatmeal Baths
Colloidal oatmeal is finely ground oat flour that dissolves in water and coats the skin with a protective, anti-inflammatory layer. Grind plain, unflavored oats in a blender until they become a fine powder, then dissolve a cup in a warm (not hot) bath. Let your Frenchie soak for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry.
You can do this once or twice a week during flare-ups. The relief is often immediate. The oatmeal soothes inflamed nerve endings and reduces the urge to scratch. Look for commercial colloidal oatmeal dog shampoos if you want a quicker option.
Coconut Oil for Skin and Folds
Virgin coconut oil has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties that make it useful for Frenchie skin issues. Apply a thin layer to irritated patches, red belly skin, or inflamed face folds. It moisturizes dry, flaky skin and creates a mild barrier against yeast overgrowth. Use it sparingly — a pea-sized amount per fold or patch is plenty. Avoid using it on open wounds or actively infected skin, where it can trap bacteria.
Apple Cider Vinegar Spray
Diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a popular home remedy for itchy paws and skin. Mix one part raw, unfiltered ACV with one part water in a spray bottle. Spritz onto itchy areas, avoiding the face, eyes, and any broken skin. The acidity helps restore the skin's natural pH and discourages yeast growth.
This works especially well for paw licking caused by environmental allergens. After walks, spray your Frenchie's paws, let it sit for a minute, then wipe dry. Many owners see a significant reduction in paw licking within a week of consistent use.
Baking Soda Paste
For localized itchy spots, a paste of baking soda and water applied directly to the skin can neutralize irritation and reduce redness. Mix equal parts baking soda and water, apply to the affected area, leave for 20 minutes, then rinse completely. Do not use on broken skin or near the eyes.
Dietary Additions That Help
Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil are one of the most evidence-backed supplements for reducing skin inflammation in dogs. Add a fish oil capsule to your Frenchie's food daily — the dose is typically 20 mg of EPA and DHA per pound of body weight. Results take 4 to 6 weeks to show, but the improvement in coat quality and itch reduction is often dramatic.
Plain, unsweetened yogurt or a canine probiotic can also help by improving gut flora, which directly influences skin health. Many Frenchies with chronic skin issues have underlying gut imbalances that drive the inflammation.
When Home Remedies Are Not Enough
If itching is severe, involves hair loss, open sores, or does not improve within a week of home treatment, see your vet. Chronic skin issues in Frenchies often require prescription medications like Apoquel or Cytopoint, allergy testing, or a prescription hydrolyzed protein diet to resolve properly.
