French Bulldogs are often marketed as low-maintenance dogs, and in some ways they are. But their grooming needs โ€” especially skin fold care โ€” require more attention than most owners expect.

Do French Bulldogs Shed?

French Bulldog grooming and brushing

Yes, and often more than people realize. Frenchies have a short, single coat that sheds year-round with heavier seasonal drops in spring and fall. They are not hypoallergenic and will leave hair on your furniture, clothes, and car seats.

A rubber curry brush or a Furminator-style deshedding tool used twice weekly keeps shedding under control. Bathing every 4 to 6 weeks with a moisturizing, oatmeal-based shampoo also helps loosen dead hair.

Face Fold Cleaning

This is the most important grooming task for a Frenchie. The deep wrinkles on their face trap moisture, food debris, and bacteria. Left uncleaned, folds develop yeast infections that smell terrible and cause serious skin damage.

Clean face folds daily with a soft cloth or unscented baby wipe. Dry thoroughly afterward โ€” moisture is the enemy. For folds that are already irritated, a thin layer of diaper rash cream or medicated powder from your vet helps heal the skin.

Tail Pocket Care

Some Frenchies have a tail pocket โ€” a small indentation beneath the tail where debris and moisture collect. Check it weekly, clean with a wipe, and dry completely. Infected tail pockets are painful and often require veterinary intervention.

Nail, Ear, and Dental Care

Trim nails every 2 to 3 weeks. Clean ears weekly with a vet-approved solution โ€” Frenchies are prone to ear infections due to their narrow ear canals. And brush teeth daily if possible, or at least provide dental chews. Small breeds are especially vulnerable to periodontal disease.
