Frenchies are velcro dogs. They want to be wherever you are: on the couch, in the bathroom, under your desk while you work. This attachment is endearing but can become problematic if you are away from home for long hours. Separation anxiety is common and can manifest as destructive chewing, excessive barking, or house soiling.
If your household is empty for 8 to 10 hours daily, a Frenchie may not be the right breed unless you have a dog walker or daycare lined up.
Frenchies are generally excellent with kids. They are sturdy enough to handle gentle roughhousing, patient enough to tolerate toddlers, and playful enough to keep older children entertained. Their small size makes them less intimidating than larger breeds, and they rarely show aggression toward family members.
That said, Frenchies are not babysitters. Young children should always be supervised around any dog, and kids need to learn not to pull ears, tail, or facial folds.
Frenchies are low to moderate energy. Two 15-minute walks per day plus some indoor playtime is usually enough. They are not jogging partners and will overheat quickly in warm weather. This makes them ideal for apartment dwellers, seniors, and people with limited mobility.
But do not mistake low energy for laziness. Frenchies are surprisingly athletic in short bursts and love games of fetch, tug-of-war, and puzzle toys.
Frenchies usually get along well with other dogs and cats, especially if raised together. Same-sex aggression is rare but possible, particularly between unneutered males. Early socialization is the key to a Frenchie that plays nicely at the dog park.
